Re: WAC Programs

Tere, one alternative to WAC outreach that you might want to explore is
Web publication. Our writing center has some losely defined
responsibilities in this area, and, although I'm in the unusually
fortunate position of having some dedicated time for this (half my salary
comes off an administrative line in our budget) and two great colleagues,
Elisabeth Piedmont-Marton and Rosa Eberly, to work with, I'm hoping that
developing an extensive Web site directed toward faculty teaching
writing-intensive classes will help to address two problems: the demands
on our time from other things and demands on faculty time. We do outreach
workshops of various sorts, but on a big, busy campus, we're in
competition with other activities for faculty time, so I think it makes
sense to make various materials (e.g. handouts, suggestions, sample
syllabuses and assignments, links to online resources) available for
people to access at their convenience. It depends, of course, on how well
your campus is networked and how much sophistication faculty have in using
the Internet, but we've seen some extraordinary changes here over the last
couple of years, and I suspect this will become a more common approach.
