Jane,
My database was created with Filemaker II.  It does do a count in each
field.  For example, I have a field to enter "yes" or "no" for ESL.  If I
do a "find" command under the Select Menu (Macintosh) for the ESL field,
it will automatically tell me the number of ESL recorded appointments. 

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how to get the database to do it.  My
system was set up by our computer service center personnel.  However, if
Filemaker II has this feature, then Pro certainly should.
