Re: selecting tutors
Mickey, I guess I have to think of my own fifteen-year-old daughter when I
see all this discussion and I have to wonder what constitutes maturity in
this context. Annie is in her first year of high school, but she loves to
come to campus and to pass herself off as a college student; she tries
hard to avoid showing her braces, and she tries to engage students in
discussions of Shakespeare or she recites Ionesco in French or starts
discussions on postmodernism. In brief, she's being pretty immature for
a mature child. She doesn't understand the conventions of college life
well, though she thinks she does. I think she's wonderful, but I would
never in a million years hire her in my writing center. Maturity and
good judgment are so essential for good tutoring. My two cents.
