This may be a digression , but before it escapes my memory totally, I wish
Eric Crump would share with us his hilarious litany about "beating a dead
horse" from his session on "New Tools, New Rools."
It may be one of those things where you had to be there to fully appreciate
the joke. But at the time I found myself wishing I had a copy in writing.
As I recall, it captured in an hilarious, building-up-kind of way the
feelings of frustration we all get when we try to effect change in our
institutions.
Sorry, Eric, if this puts you on the spot. But anybody who makes me laugh
out loud and hard at a session deserves my thanks. This was one of may
bright spots for me in Phoenix.
I remember being shocked the last time I went to 4C's several years ago and
virtually everyone read complex, high-sounding papers. These folks are
supposed to be teachers I told myself. Perhaps as writers also, they were
too enamored of the written page to let go of it. Since that time, either
presentations have improved or I have gotten better at picking them. I
intend not to wait so long again to return to 4Cs.
P.S. ...you know you are a technorhetorician when you read your paper at
4Cs from a laptop perched on your knee.
