I'm sympathetic with both positions. As a listener, nothing makes me more
nervous than a presenter without a text. But I try to follow Andrea
Lunsford's advice to me and her other graduate students: always write a talk
(not a paper) and then know it well enough that you can divert from it--but
plan your ad libs.
