position of Associate Director at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX.

St. Mary's University is an independent Catholic university established in
1852 by the Society of Mary (Marianists). It is the sixth largest private
academic institution in Texas with a diverse student body of 4000, including
2500 undergraduates and the Graduate School and the School of Law.
The Learning Assistance Center (LAC), located at the center of the
university on the third floor of the Academic Library, is a comprehensive,
fully-funded learning center which includes a well-established Writing
Center and provides tutoring to subjects a various as math, chemistry,
accounting, physics, Spanish, economics, theology, philosophy, political
science, biology, computer science and more.
The LAC is budgeted to hire approximately 40 tutors per semester servicing
some 600 students and generating about 4500 contact hours per semester. A
ten-computer Multimedia Instructional Center was built last summer and is
being used with at risk students to teach writing and for library
instruction for courses throughout the university.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Associate Director, Learning Assistance Center

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
I. In conjunction with the Director of the Learning Assistance Center
(LAC), the Associate Director is responsible for:
1. hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluating student tutors;
2. teaching writing, reading, study skills workshops in content area courses
(e.g. first year academic skills course);
3. tutoring, advising, and tracking at-risk students as needed;
4. designing and presenting seminars on study skills, time management, or
test-taking strategies for students and other groups;
5. preparing and maintaining LAC records and materials;
6. serving on job-related administrative committees as appropriate.
II. As Director of the Academic Preparation Program (APP), the Associate
Director designs, supervises, and coordinates a program in the fall for
60-80 conditionally admitted students by:
1. designing program composition and course plans for two courses in
reading/writing and mathematics; teaching the reading/writing course.
2. hiring and coordinating seven adjunct faculty;
3. hiring, training, and supervising five to seven tutors;
4. coordinating all administrative aspects of program from recruiting and
academic advising to tracking and assessment;
5. preparing and managing a program budget;
6. selecting appropriate course materials, field trips, and guest speakers;
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Masters required; writing/English/rhetoric or reading/critical thinking
background preferred.
2. Two or more years experience teaching college-level writing, critical
thinking, preferred experience of two years or better with developmental
education and minority populations; will consider high school teaching
experience.
3. Excellent communication and analytical skills.
4. Familiarity with college admissions, learning and reading strategies,
and assessment.
5. Good computer skills (especially on MSWord, MSAccess, and MSExcel).
5. Tolerance, wit, and vision -- not necessarily in that order.
