                    The Nineteenth Annual
           EAST CENTRAL WRITING CENTERS ASSOCIATION
                          Conference

Front and Center: Re-imagining Our Work

                     April 18 and 19, 1997

                    University of Pittsburgh
                    Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The 1997 conference of the East Central Writing Centers Association will be
held on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland.

Writing center administrators and staff, university or high school
administrators, graduate and undergraduate writing consultants and tutors,
and teachers of writing in composition programs and across the disciplines
will meet to discuss the multiple ways that writing centers work to enhance
the culture of writing instruction in their own institutions; to share
insights, strategies, and practices; to celebrate the work we do in writing
centers and challenge us to imagine what else we might be doing; to foster
communication across disciplines, between institutions, and among
ourselves. Local writing teachers will be featured: Mary Broglie, Bethel
Park High School; Lea Marsiello, Director of Liberal Studies English,
Indiana University of Pennsylvania; and Gary Stoehr and Maria Piantanita,
School of Pharmacy, University of Pittsburgh. The speaker at dinner on
Friday will be Patricia Stock, Associate Executive Director of the National
Council of Teachers of English and Professor of English at Michigan State
University. The speaker at lunch on Saturday will be John Trimbur,
Professor of English and Director of the Technical, Scientific and
Professional Communication program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

  Conference Registration

Conference registration, which includes dinner on Friday and lunch on
Saturday, is $60 for faculty and full-time staff and $30 for students and
part-time staff. (After March 31, registration is $75 for faculty and
full-time staff and $40 for others, and meals may not be included.)
Registration will be accepted by mail (see the form below), by fax
(412-624-6639), or by e-mail (marshall+@pitt.edu). Registration fees may
be paid by check (make checks payable to the University of Pittsburgh) or
cash. We cannot accept payment by credit card. All participants are
encouraged to register in advance of the conference.

  On-Site Visits

A number of innovative writing centers exist in the area high schools,
middle schools, and colleges. Visits to these will be available on Friday
morning, and we will leave from the University of Pittsburgh at 10.

  Accommodations

Some hotel rooms are available at the Hampton Inn in Oakland at a special
conference rate of $72/night. This includes breakfast, free parking, free
shuttle service to the University and free transportation from the airport.
If you wish to reserve a hotel room, call 1-800-426-7866. Other
accommodations are available including a Howard Johnson and Holiday Inn in
Oakland. Delays in remodeling the youth hostel make that facility
unavailable.

  Travel

Pittsburgh International Airport is about 30 minutes from Oakland and is
served by many of the major airlines. The cost of a taxi ride is $25. The
Airport Limousine, a shuttle service between the airport and Oakland or
downtown, costs approximately $21 round trip and departs from various
locations in Oakland, including the Hampton Inn, the Holiday Inn, Webster
Hall, and Howard Johnson. For reservations and schedules, call
412-471-8900 or 412-471-2250. The train station is located downtown. For
information about train service to Pittsburgh, contact Amtrak or your
travel agent.

  Food

Conference participants are invited to attend the dinner on Friday, April
18, and lunch on Saturday, April 19. The cost of the meals is included in
the registration fee, but if you plan to attend either event, full
registration payment must be received by Monday, March 31, and you must
indicate that you plan to attend in the Food Information section of the
Registration Form. (After March 31, registrations will still be accepted,
but the meals may not be included).

  Refund Policy

Participants wishing to cancel should do so by notifying us by April 8.
