Re: Tutor Qualifications

D'Ann--
I forgot the part of your message about portfolios of writing and
how one screens for interpersonal communication skills.

Our consultants write a literacy autobiography at the beginning of the
semester. Out of this comes proposals for conferences, newsletter items,
and annual reports. They also write mid-semester and end 'o semester
reports. I like the idea of journals, but we haven't tried this.

We screen for interperssonal skills in the appllication and interview
process. The application askes students to respond to a series of
scenarios that deal variously with angry writers, shy writers, and
overconfident writers. If we like what they say in the app, the
interview gives us a chance to see how they handle a scenario. One of
the interviewers plays a "student" who has to write a difficult
assignment she/he doesn't understand. She/he is frustrated, but has a
draft. The inteviewee plays the consultant, and the scenario is acted
out for about 10-15 minutes. The applicant is then asked to reflect on
how things went.

Hope I haven't overloaded you,

Chere
