Our developmental writing group/committee has been asked to work on the 
prompt for the writing placement essay writtenby all incoming freshmen at 
our college.  I have a feeling the whole project is going to mushroom as we 
consider placement issues that transcend the question of what prompt to use
..

I would appreciate any suggestions on sources and on successful placement 
essay prompts that have been used at other institutions.  The essay 
determines whether students go directly into freshman composition or 
whether they are determined to need a course we call "Writing Workshop" 
before doing so.
