I think Denise has hit on something here. It is the responsibility of the
WC to advise the student about the need for citation, but not to argue with
them or force them to do anything. I feel that the WC has fulfilled its
obligation by mentioning it--it is then between student and instructor. By
the way, in my undergrad days, I had a few assignments (from the English
dept) that did not require formal citation. They were usually preliminary
papers, and we got down to the nitty-gritty of citation in future papers.
