I also direct a community college writing center staffed by adjunct faculty 
and student tutors.  Our student tutors are fantastic and I, like Howard, 
can think of lots of good reasons to have them in the center.  Many do not 
have vast writing experience to pull out of their back pockets that, say, a 
faculty member or grad student would have, but they are all aware listeners 
and serve as a fine audience for writing at our college.
