the thread has seemed to focus on our students going out on to the job
market; however, I write most of my letters of reference for students to
go on to graduate school, law school, or med school.  Because these students
generally come from the tutoring program I supervise, I draw direct evidence
from their work there to demonstrate their competencies and intelligence--
more in the "show, not tell" version, pulling quotes from evaluations students
made of tutoring sessions for instance.
