Rather than saying "yes" or "no" to requests for recommendation letters, I
prefer to say "This is what I could write for you..." and free-speak a letter
off the top of my head. I follow this with "Are you satisfied with that or
would you rather ask someone else?" Why should I decide. Maybe my mediocre
letter is the best that student can gather?
While this approach wouldn't head off law suits from future employers, it ought
to keep the recommendee from being upset in the future.
