Having served on several search committees and serving 
currently as a chair on such a committee, I have found that 
you learn a lot more about a candidate through phone calls.  
A phone call doesn't have the damning permanence of a letter, 
and I suspect people are more honest.  Shouldn't (Couldn't?) 
potential employers do a little more research than a letter 
of recommendation provides?
