Re: The "S" Word

Dear Larry,

I am not in the Pacific Northwest, but I think my university--Jesuit,
liberal-arts with an undergrad enrollment of about 3500--qualifies as a peer
institution. So I'll tell you a little about my set-up here andyou can contact
me if you have other questions.

I was hired three years ago into a full-time, tenure-track position directing
the writing center at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. I get 50% release
time to direct the center, which means I teach a 2-1 load (or a 1-2 load, as I
see fit). One of those courses is the tutor education course. I have a
nine-month contract, tenurable in the English department. As writing center
director, however, I report to the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and
I control my own budget. My base salary is $42,000 for nine months--same deal,
extra pay for work in the summer, etc. I have a Ph. D. in Rhet/Comp from
Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Hope this helps.
