I've noticed that when I talk to our most basic basic writers in writing
center and ask what they are working on, the answer is almost always
"nothing" unless they are actually producing words on paper that they 
will clean up turn in.  The tendency not to connect what I think of as
part of the writing process to the actual production of the product is
not I think limited to basic writers.

There is surely a happy medium to strive for with our students.  I think
everything is related to the final product and they think nothing is.  We're
both wrong.
