Gail,
Without having the North article in front of me, I think that he
may be refering to a strategy that I use to teach invention.  It
is called tagmemics and, to me, it seems to be based on physics.
The strategy uses terms like particle and wave to help students
/writers explore a topic fully.  I have a handout, not with me 
of course, that I can share with you or I can e-mail you more
specifics if you are interested.
