Gail-- The tagmemic heuristic is a nine-cell grid with "particle," "wave," and "field" as one axis and "contrast," "variation," and "distribution" as the other. You can also find it in Young, Becker, and Pike's _Rhetoric: Discovery and Change_ (Harcourt, 1970). It was quite commonly used in the late 70's and early 80's.
