Re: scheduling
It was I who mentioned scheduling 62 consultants. Sorry to take so long to
respond; I've been housebound due to Austin's puny shimmer of ice and sleet
and the resulting closing of the university for two days.
Anyway, I wish there were a computer program that would do the scheduling,
but I don't know if one. Here are my hints. Make each consultant do the
work for you. We use a form that asks for three schedule choices. I ask
that they plot them each out. I refuse to figure out schedules around
every consultants class and teaching hours. When people start telling all
the hours they are available and all the hours they're not, I just stop my
ears and ask them to think out their choices themselves. We also have a
few other guidelines, like starting shifts on the hour (this is not a
requirement), and making sure each shift is at least 2 hours long but no
longer than 5 hours. I also urge people not to request a WC schedule until
the rest of their schedule is firm.
These procedures help, but it can still drive me mad and I still screw it
up early and often.
