hi kate,
check these out:
Bruffee, Kenneth A., Collaborative Learning: Higher Education,
Interdependence, and the Authority of Knowledge. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins
University Press, 1993.
Meyer, Emily, and Louise K. Smith. The Practical Tutor. New York: Oxford
UP, 1987.
Ryan, Leigh, The Bedford Guide for Writing Tutors, Boston: Bedford Books of
St. Martin's, 1994
Murphy, Cristina, and Steve Sherwood, The St. Martin's Sourcebook
for Writing Tutors, New York: St. Martin's, 1995
I use these for a 5 hour course to prepare tutors. I'd suggest you lobby
for a longer-term, higher-credit course, preferably upper division credit.
Your colleagues might be assuming tutoring is a low-priority, low-prestige
activity; that's BULL.
There are lots of other great books and articles. Look for an article by
North "the idea of a writing center", reprinted in the Murphy/Sherwood book.
It's a fighting document with a real attitude; take it with a grain of salt
(or take up arms and kick some hiney yourself!).
good luck,
