This is quite fascinating. Here at Bishop's University the
Counselling Service looks after the non-writing tutoring (called Peer
Tutoring). So far as I know, the peer tutors must have completed the
course for which help is asked with at least a B+ and, I think,
receive a letter of recommendation from their instructor. They are
paid $8.00 an hour, $4.00 of which the tuttee pays and the other
$4.00 (all in lowly Canadian dollars of course) is contributed by the
Counselling Service which has a special fund. All the counsellor
does is match the students; they have to arrange their own times. Is
there any training at all? I really don't know, but will now
enquire, although this is not an additional burden I need --
especially after reading the postings!

A separate issue:

At our Writing Centre to date we have only used professional
tutors, but are now moving towards incorporating peer tutors
(undergraduates). There is some resistance to this step (forced by
financial circumstances). Have any of you gone through a similar
transition? Any advice would be very welcome.
