Re: other tutoring

Lynnell,

Like yourself, I also supervise Academic Tutoring in addition to the Writing
Center. The job involves recruiting tutors, getting faculty approval, orienting
them to processes/procedures, doing some minimal in-service training, and
making the connections with clients seeking help.I also try to make sure that
neither tutors nor the tutoring process is being misused.

It has been a very time-consuming but not very pleasurable part of my job, and
I'm looking for ways to redeem it. I try to get students to use their own
departmental/course-related resources first. I'm introducing Supplemental
Instruction next year. And I'm trying to think about how Academic Tutoring
might be seen as integral to the mission of a liberal arts college. Currently,
about 20% of the student body use academic tutoring each year, but no one wants
to talk about it, not departments, not the Teaching and Learning Center, not
individual faculty members.

Sorry to reply on-list; I was too quick on the reply button.

Where am I? Who am I?
How did I come to be here?
What is this thing called the world?
How did I come into the world?
	Why was I not consulted?
And if I am compelled to take part in it,
	Where is the director?
	I want to see him.
