Re: grammar tricks (fwd)

Hi to those of you interested in info on cybertutoring. I had begun
replying to this off list but will be happy to do so on list if others are
interested.
Our owl is in its infancy right now. We give writing assistance over email
and fax (fax because our uploading anddownloading procedures are very
cumbersome right now. This is supposed to change.) Right now ours serves
nursing students who take courses at remote sites over distance learning
technology. They are the perfect target for an owl since they can't get
tutoring at their site campuses because they're not enrolled as students
there. And, they never or rarely come to Plattsburgh,so they don't use our
writing center here.
One thing I quickly realized was how important our tutoring skills of
making a session a truly human interchange was important in owl work too.
Perhaps even more important, in fact, for an audience that has minimal
contact with the university in other ways. I also learned that, just as in
ftf tutoring, the request will be for grammar assistance when the real
needs are more substantial. this can be tricky to negotiate over email.
Well, that's enough for now. I'll be glad to answer any questions about
how we do things here. We're a very simple and unsophisticated setup right
now but are planning expansion and new technologies when the distance
learning project here becomes a campus-wide project in a few years (right
now it's limited to the nursing program.)
Have a good thanksgiving, folks!
