Re: Motivating Correctness
When a student takes his/her paper to a writing center, the text becomes
more public and the audience is expanded so just by virtue of our
existence, we provide some motivation to writers to expand their skills.
If the tutor responds positively to the student's ideas, the student may
feel as though those ideas are worthy of even larger audiences.
In my writing center tutors also encourage writers to "publish" in many
ways: sending papers to conferences, presenting at university conferences
and research expos, sending things out to publications. We also have
tried formalizing this function by holding a reading event during which
student writers read papers and receive positive feedback. It is,
however, difficult to organize and maintain such a program when you are
swamped with *many* other responsibilities.
