I, too, enjoy  _The Well-Tempered Sentence: A Punctuation Handbook 
for the Innocent, the Eager, and the Doomed_ and _The Transitive 
Vampire: A Handbook of Grammar for the Innocent, the Eager, and the 
Doomed_, both given to me by my daughter, who wrote on the flyleaf of 
the latter: "To the direct object of my affections...."  My copies 
are likely the same vintage as yours--published by Times Books in 
1984.  I do have the publisher's address for these.  Is Times Books 
still publishing?
