Kate, to avoid comma splices and run-on sentences, be certain every 
clause but one has a coordinating or subordinating conjunction or 
semi-colon in front of it.  One clause must stand alone.  (Of course, 
first you have to learn to identify clauses:  mark verb, subject, 
completer; then put smaller units in parentheses.)  

In the who/whom case, isn't it simpler just to teach the subject/object 
distinction?
