At the University of Akron, a comprehensive, open admissions, urban 
university of 23,000, all Writing Lab hours are available for student 
conferences.  We see two students simultaneously for 50-minute sessions, 
introducing ourselves and the students and negotiating on the spot how to 
proceed.  Our plan is to establish an ad hoc community of writers in which 
writers listen to each other and respond to each other, and either or both 
may spend part of the session writing--it is a writing lab, after all.  We 
find that this procedure demystifies the process of writing and reduces the 
hierarchal relationship which might otherwise be created by our professional 
staff of part-time Basic Writing/Freshman Comp. teachers.
