Mill, Dickens' _Hard Times_ has worked well for me when I have a lot of
sci/eng/math types. If you're looking for shorter things to teach techniques, I
highly highly recommend two short stories by Arthur C. Clarke: "The Nine Billion
Names of God" (about the ironic power of computers) and "The Star" (which I
always teach the week before Christmas break). Things like Swift's "Description
of a City Shower," any of the ironic Byron stuff (Cantos 1-3 of _Don Juan_
esp.), _The Metamorphosis_, Melville's _Bartleby_--all these have worked well
for that crowd.
Have fun!
