Neal, Since Writing Centers and tutoring programs tend to be specific to 
their context, some places have an easier time of collaborating with faculty 
than others.  I must say, though, that I thought talking to faculty about 
lousy assignments would be harder than it actually was.  Once I calmed down 
about how annoying the assignments were, I pitched the idea as a way to 
avoid having so many students with lousy papers.  I started with "you know, 
I really had some trouble helping your students with that last paper, how 
did the papers turn out?"   I understand your concern about being the new 
person on the block, though.  But  I am a academic administrator with a 
yearly contract -- and I ended up gaining the respect of a few folks.  Good
