To your first question: yes.
To your second question:
I'm really beginning to wonder if writing centers really are or need to be
part of this particular institution. I wrote a paper once, taking a cue
from a comment Fred Kemp made on this very list, asserting that writing
centers ought to take *be* writing instruction, that collegiality and
individuality and community were lots more interesting and valuable in
terms of learning than were grades/teachers/papers/blah blah blah (ie the
classroom, that whole works).
But I wonder these days whether being the primary venue for writing
instruction within our current institutional context is a) possible or b)
desireable. Maybe neither.
maybe we could use some innovative *new* educational environments to
spring up and maybe writing center folk would be likely candidates to lead
such efforts.
Whatcha think of that? Wanna start a university?
