Re: TQM-like stuff for WC

In a manufacturing environment, TQM is seemingly easier to define.
In fact, the emphasis seems to be more simplistic because
this scenario involves concrete, similiar objects perhaps on a large scale
assembly line. Such a concept involves all levels of management even to
include the lowest worker on the payroll. Perhaps when dealing with service
organizations such as a writing center, TQM would begin with each student
worker offering their own ideas and working in unison with the individual
faculty members involved also. However, for the simple reason that each
student has different writing needs, TQM becomes quite complex and more
difficult to define.
Such a concept has interested me greatly over the last three years
because I am not only a tutor but also a management major. Therefore, I would
like to propose that we incorporate workshops in which outside faculty
members could be involved in the center. A proper start would be to request
that each business professor assigns a paper that would entail one
group visit to the writing center. This class meeting would
be a type of workshop in which the tutor assigned to this area of study would
assist them with any questions, ideas, or perspectives. The workshop would
be quite beneficial if the individual tutor carried some kind of
knowledge about the topic of discussion through either recent experience or
perhaps reading the material the students are involved in . This in itself
would entail a visit by the specified tutor with the professor assigning the
report and certainly some extra preparation outside of the center. Not only
would this expose the center to more individuals on campus, but it would also
stress the importance of writing whether a person is involved with mass
communications or even a field in finance. thanks,Sean Milligan F.M.U.
