Re Christina Murphy/Joe Law/Harry Opperman
Group,
I received an e-mail message from Christina today saying she likes
her new job as Chair of the English Department at Memphis State
University. Because of the many duties involved in settling into a
new place, she hasn't re-subscribed to WCenter yet. She did ask,
however, that I publish her snail and e-mail addresses on this list
so folks will know how to reach her. Here goes:
Dr. Christina Murphy, Chair
English Department
University of Memphis
463 Patterson Hall
Memphis, TN 38152

Joe Law has checked in with us, as well, and also sounds happy with
his new surroundings at Wright State Univ. in Dayton, Ohio. Although
he didn't ask me to publish his e-mail address, I'm sure he won't mind:

Turning to matters more sad, on Sunday morning we lost to cancer one of our
colleagues in the English Department here at Texas Christian
University--Harry Opperman, who taught through the spring semester. On
Saturday, a friend and colleague took him to a lake north of here, a favorite
fishing spot, so Harry could say goodbye to the lake and to several fishing
buddies. The next morning, back at his home, he died from complications of
lung cancer. Some of you may have known Harry, who came here as a young
man not long out of graduate school in 1970. A writer of essays and
fiction, he taught creative writing and American Literature. A memorial
service was held in the campus chapel on Wednesday afternoon, a celebration
and remembrance filled with tributes from colleagues and students, gentle
laughter, and music selected by one of his sons from The Grateful Dead,
Dire Straits, The Who, and The Rolling Stones. The experience was
altogether moving--right down to the recessional, "Dixie Chicken." Harry,
though a quiet man, would have liked it all--except, perhaps, the tears.
