WAC facilitator wanted
Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, is seeking an energetic, engaging,
interactive, cross-curricular faclitator to lead two Writing Across
the Curriculum workshops, this fall and during January of 1997.
(Apologies to Bucknell Writing Program for stealing some of your
language--your message reminded me that we are looking for workshop
leaders, too!)
The WAC program at Hollins needs re-energizing, and these two half-day
workshops will be the key, we hope to re-engaging our faculty in this
important work. Topics we would like addressed in the workshop are:
- Basic principles of WAC theory, to bring faculty up to date on
current work in this field
- Strategies for incorporating a writing component into already
existing courses
- Strategies for developing new courses with a writing intensive focus
- Methods for assessing course and writing objectives and adapting
these to a particular discipline
Hollins is a small liberal arts college for women located in Southwestern
Virginia. We do not have a freshman comp requirement, but instead require
first-year students to select from various courses across the disciplines
with a writing intesive focus during their first or second semester. While
this approach is ahead of many others across the nation, there has been
a lack of attention paid to faculty development over the last several
years. We would like to encourage new facualty to adopt approaches
that support established practices, and prevent veteran teachers from
stagnating in practices not consistent with changing disciplinary
writing needs and research.
If you know of someone who you think would be an effective workshop
leader on these topics, please let me know. Please send all
recommendations to:
