Jon and Lynne--About sweet spots, centers, and margins.  I don't think 
there is A sweet spot--it moves around, shifting with actors and stages.  
The margin question for me "centers" around whether I am marginal by 
choice or by assignment.  By choice offers many more options than by 
assignment.  If I want to be there, I'm there with  optimism and freedom; 
if I'm assigned, I may feel trapped or I may be forcefully trapped.  

However, if we really believe in the value of difference, of otherness, 
then the sweet spot may be the spot to which all the tomatoes are 
flying--that is, if we believe that we learn things from opposition that 
we can't learn from agreement or affirmation, then the sweet spot might 
be in the assigned margin where we're really uncomfortable.
