Invitation to Netoric's Tuesday Cafe Discussion, 8/27/96 (fwd)
I routinely forward Tuesday Cafe invites, but this week I reckon it looks
a bit self-serving for it to come from me. But perhaps I can mitigate that
effect some by pointing out that just behind Tari's apparently glowing
introduction is a courteous challenge. In response to Jeff Galin's
question to Rhetnt-L, she's asking for some concreteness, some evidence
to support and give shape to the sometimes wild rantings I've been guilty
of promulgating for several years. In a sense, this is like a
dissertation defense, and since at the rate I'm going it may be the
closest I'll ever come to one, I'm going to approach it in that
spirit.

You all know Eric Crump. He's that guy who goes around saying,
"NO MORE GRADES--ONLY AUTHENTIC LEARNING FROM NOW ON."
And he has this awesome philosophy about grades and learning
and the purpose of education to go with it, which he's shared
with us frequently. And boy oh boy, do a lot of us eat it up.
Right from the serving bowl. With the big spoon. While cheering
wildly, with our mouths full.
But the other day, over on the Rhetnet list, in the midst of the
philosophizing and cheering and so on, Jeff Galin broke in to
say something like, "Hey, wait a minute, Eric--it just can't be
as easy as you make it sound to stop giving grades and making
traditional assignments and generally following the rules and
the accepted practices." And that got us thinking: we know a
lot about Eric's theories and the way they COULD work in ideal
conditions. But we've forgotten to ask him an important
question: How the heck does he manage to carry out his ideas
in the real world we all have to live in? What REALLY happens
in the Crumpean Classroom?
So we asked Eric to come to the Tuesday Cafe and give us the
real story, with details from classes he's taught recently.
As background for the discussion, Eric offers the following
materials, some from his classes and some giving more general
insight into his philosophy and theory:
Eric's fall course:

Eric's winter course:

Eric's online course for next semester (didn't get enough
enrollment to make this fall):

The 'Authority' proposal discussion for CCCC97:

Have a look at those, and come to the cafe with your questions
for Eric!
See you at the cafe!
