A simple, or is it overly simple, question I have is how far away are
the dorms from the regular Writing Center? It seems like moving
tutors to diverse situations on a campus is a waste of funds...you
have to hire twice as many tutors to cover the same hours. I have
faced a similar problem here at Salt Lake Community College.
Initially there was some amount of tension between the Writing Center
and the Learning Center...since they seemed to want to have writing tutors at
their location....after one quarter the Learning Center director was
conviced by the waste of funds this had and the Writing Center took
in all the tutors. The problem, however, persists because our CC
is "multi-campused." We have 2 large "main campuses" and several
small satellite campuses seperated by several miles of traffic ladden
roads. While we do support tutors at the second "main campus" and a
the largest satelite campus, we only have one Writing Center...and it
is at the largest main campus. (Does any of this make sense?)
Because of problems with the "satellite" tutors, for fall quarter I'm
going to implement a rotation schedule in which all tutors go to the
various sites....and all tutors come into the Writing Center every
week. I realize that this will put some travel strain on tutors, but
because of the problems we have had in the past, it seems like a
viable solution. My preference, of course, would be to extend
tutoring only via technology....but there are logistical and
technological problems with that solution....
