The way computers are stolen on college campuses is that someone slips in,
unplugs the computer when the room is unattended, and then walks out,
looking official and so on. Usually in broad daylight. Nighttime
break-ins into a locked room are another matter entirely. Reasonable
precautions about locked windows and doors, and making sure you know who
has keys, is enough. It is the daylight, one computer thief you need to
think about. Cables and locks work just fine for this, because they slow
a thief down and require him/her to make too much noise to be unnoticed.
This is true of most thievery and burglary. There is little you can do to
stop a planned, night-time raid. It is the small-time, improvisational
thief that you need to consider--make it hard to take things quickly and
quietly and you will have done the job.
