Off-Campus Clients
Having spent nearly a year lurking on this list while setting up a new
Writing Center here at Willamette University in Salem, OR, and beginning
implementation of a new Writing Program (entailing a requirement of four
"writing-centered" courses at various levels, both in and outside the
student's major), developing and teaching a course for undergraduate
writing consultants, and devising forms, flyer, and newsletter, I am
exceedingly belated in thanking all of you for many ideas that have proved
valuable--and even more belated in thanking Jon Olson for the heap of
materials he furnished us (through my colleague Carol Long)! Most
recently, you have been giving me both incentive and lots of practical
advice for moving from paper forms to electronic as well as from a paper
newsletter to a Webpage.
However, I seem finally to have come up with a question that I haven't
seen raised by others (there were weeks when I didn't even find time to
skim the Digests, simply saved them with the intention of reading them
this summer--along with everything else I saved to do this summer!--so I
may have missed it): are any of you providing services to off-campus
clients, and, if so, how are you charging them for these services? My
question is occasioned by a request from an area professional, who is an
(advanced) ESL writer, for consulting or lessons. From the beginning, I
have been eager to undertake outreach to the community as soon as we had
our on-campus operation solidly established (I think we do), but I had
been envisioning a writers' conference and other special programs, not
individual consulting. Nonetheless, it seems to me there would be great
value in our working individually with area writers. I'd be grateful to
hear from any of you who are doing so in your areas.
