WAC -Reply

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Dear Readers:

The University of Washington's Tacoma Campus is gearing up a WAC
program.
We have five academic programs so far--more are coming--and all of
them are interdisciplinary, with an emphasis on writing and critical
thinking.

I'm swimming in WAC sources. Any suggestions on directing my swim?
What do you consider a must-read? Many thanks.

Beth

Dear Beth,
Sorry to be late in replying, but I've been out of the office for a
week. Anyway...
We are just beginning a WAC effort, and I, like you, have accumulated
mountains of literature--all good, but rather overwhelming. However,
one of the richest sources for me was _Writing Across the Curriculum:
A Guide to Developing Programs_, Susan H. McLeod and Margot Soven,
eds., SAGE, 1992. I especially appreciated the second chapter by
Barbara Walvoord, "Getting Started" because I was needing very much
this basic and helpful information at the time.
I have tried to do ongoing reading of what I have collected,
absorbing the data and germinating ideas so that I can make decisions
as they come up. There is a lot of good stuff, and you will begin to
pick up on the names of the experts--Elaine Maimon, Toby Fulwiler,
Art Young, Chris Thaiss, Joan Mullin and so many more.
We're getting ready for our fall in-service, and this is a crucial
semester. We are hoping to develop a few "writing-enhanced" classes
for spring.
Let me hear from you about your program's progress.
Good luck,
