I'm beginning to suspect I live in a paralllel universe.  However, I suspect 
it's a matter of the differences between a drop-in center and an appointment
center.  Ours in a drop-in center, and our tutors spend the first couple of
minutes of a conference figuring out what the student wants.  It's the
essence of our conferences.  

In fact, I wouldn't mind a form that simply asks writers to try to express  
why they have come to writing center.  On the other hand, they are about to 
tell us.  The form would kind of be invention for the conference and perhaps
would focus it more quickly.
