Yes, quite a flop.  I took some flak about it for a couple of years after,
too. :)   The tutors would come up to me with the tags on and say, "Hi,
I'm Stacy, I'll be your tutor today.  Would you like to begin with an
appetizer?"   I got the message.  :)

And Katie

I think "associate" is a great term.  I have also used "colleague."
Both indicate the reality, which is that it is not the hierarchy that
matters in a writing center but the teamwork.
