hi folks, please check out the URL above. It is one of many sites on the
WWW that are observing "black thursday" in protest of the bill that has
passed congress and lies on the president's desk, waiting for signature or
veto. The bill is the telecommunications bill that gives considerably
more freedom for the telecommunications business, e.g. phone and cable
companies and the like. That may or may not be a good idea. However, a
rider on the bill would make use of the internet or any online service for
transmission of information about abortion a criminal act, subject to a
quarter million dollar fine and/or five years in prison. That rider is an
application of the 1873 Comstock Act, the foolishness of which gave us the
word 'comstockery.' (i think) So here we are, using our wonderful listserv
to talk shop, while the literacy we hope to cultivate would be seriously
constrained, and the MINDS learning that literacy, is threatened by
nitwits. The telecommunications bill IS an education issue. It's our
turf. remember this email address: " president@whitehouse.gov " Please
urge the president to veto the bill. hopefully, james werchan , ohio
