Some people have expressed concern about a fall-off in numbers during second 
semester.  At our writing center, we worry when numbers go up, fearing that the 
bandwagon effect will attract writers who are not really committed.

Our goal is the same as Gideon's, the Old Testament leader who needed to reduce 
the size of his army down to the few and the proud.  To weed out lax and 
tentative writers, we move our writing center outside during January and 
February.  Last Friday, with windchills in the -60 range, we finally got rid of 
all the hangers-on.
