Just to jump in on the writing notes to instructors issue -- at ISU
we put a bunch of standard items with a check-off on the form that
goes to instructors (one copy of which stays in the student's file
for subsequent referral by other tutors) -- so for the routine
sessions, the tutor just checks the boxes (organization, assignment
expectations, development with examples, sentence variety, etc.)
That gets the tutors out of the evaluation business -- there's an
"other" space, too, so when warranted, a tutor can make a more
detailed and specific "report." But in training sessions, we often
discuss the kinds of problems that arise when (and we've had some!)
very verbose tutors try to impress the instructors with their ideas
about composition theory.!!! If anyone would like to see our report
sheets, I'd be glad to oblige. Maybe post off-list:
