My theory about this: in the fall semester, the first-year students
are all freaked about the changes in the discourse conventions from
high school to university, and they come running in to have explicit
discussions about these conventions -- which are otherwise floating
around them implicitly. By the next semester, they've all got a full
semester under their belts, have figured out a lot, and feel less of
a need to be supported at every stage of every writing project.
