Re: Promotions

James, et.al.,

This spring, I am trying to increase awareness of our presence on
the Tech campus, so I created a flyer addressed to all faculty
members (part-time and lecturers) on campus. I used a memo
format which includes our heading and I prefaced the text with
"Please share the following information about the University
Writing Center with your students." The information was divided
into 4 units: Mission, Method, Location and Hours, and Type of
Consultations. In the first part, I included our mission
statement which appears on our web page; under method, I
commented on our reading and responding to texts at various
stages of the writing process and that although we would address
sentence level concerns, we did not proofread or edit; Location
and Hours is fairly self-explanator; and the under types of
consultations, I commented on responding to hardcopy face-to-face
and responding to electronic texts and the methods of submission.

This flyer goes out today. Don't know if it will impact our
numbers or not, but we'll see.

Cost, of course, is an issue. Tech has 1598 total faculty
members. For Mail Tech to label and send that many documents
will cost $75.00. To print and fold the documents will run
another $80 or $90. I don't know if your budget will allow you
to send the info or not.

My hope is that the flyer will make the faculty aware of our
presence and that they will encourage their students to come.

We are also targeting the computer-based English classes. We've
created an OWL which will be open to anyone who wants to send a
document (and that information is included on the flyer to all
faculty), and we are asking instructors to let us make
presentations in those classes. At that time, we will distribute
flyers which explain how to submit a text electronically through
e-mail or through the web page.

My point in the previous example is that we've targeted a
specific group. Is there a specific group that might be more
receptive than others to your services?

We too are apprehensive about whether students will take
advantage of the OWL. We'll see.
