Thanks Marcy. That is a much clearer way to say what I was trying to get at,
though Stephen's observations about students' apparent helplessness to take
responsibility for their own engagement does reflect reality in many places
and many cases. But as you note, how we interpret the causes of that reality
is still an open question. Maybe that's immaturity, maybe it's the habit of
dependence that our entire educational system from top to bottom promotes.
Students are sort of paralyzed by it.
