So, I'm wondering if the expectation of being entertained is very
widespread, or if it can be attributed to the fact that most of my
students were fairly pampered kids, or what. Anyone had similar -- or
markedly different -- experiences?

Thursday night is party night on this campus, so Friday mornings are
notorious for bleary eyes. And this morning a temperature in the
teens (very cold for Oklahoma) and 1/16 inch of snow on the ground
(enough to send Oklahomans running to buy extra milk and bread) added
to the regular bleary-eye syndrome brought a "tough house" to my 8:00
a.m. fyc course. And I assure you that "stimulating" or "engaging"
would never have reached those people, probably wouldn't have even
rolled them out of bed. Do I see myself as an entertainer? First.
Always. My students claim I both look and act like Robin Williams; I
take both as compliments.
