Re: Political turf problems

Group,

We send a note to faculty whose students give us permission to do
so, but we only list the students names underneath the following
printed comment:
****
According to our records, the following student(s) came to the
University Writing Center for assistance with their writing
project(s) during the period cited [for example--January 22-26].
If you have any questions about the consultation(s), please
contact us at 742-2776. We are located in 310 English Building,
and our hours are 9-5 Monday through Friday.
****
Below this message, we list the name(s) of the student(s).
Occasionally, we will have a faculty member drop by to talk about
a student, but so occasionally that I can barely remember it.
The effect of the message on the faculty member, however, seems
to be positive because the message tells the instructor that the
students has shown the initiative of coming.

We discourage instructors from requiring students to come to the
center, and when we see 15-20 names on a weekly message we figure
that's what's going on. If we see a pattern, we usually remind
instructors that students should be encouraged, not required.

Thus, faculty members know when their students come to the center
(if the student so desires), but we make no comment about the
quality of the work.
