Reading Labs
Our writing center must conduct a reading lab for Comp. I students who score
less than 19 on the ACT reading section, but scored above 19 on the English
section. In the past, the students have been required to complete eight
chapters in a workbook. The students dislike the text and the busy work.
This is my first year as director of the center. The chair has encouraged me
to make changes, but I'd like to know what others are doing. From what I
understand, there used to be a regular reading course for these students
which, of course, required teachers who reqired salaries. The course was
abandoned and the writing center took over the responsibility.
I'm curious to know what others are doing.
Thanks,
Toni Boyd
